Conservation Grants at Work!

Fly Fishers International’s Conservation Grant Program provides grants to support “on the ground” conservation activities.  Projects include stream restoration, biological sampling, fish or habitat research, construction of boat ramps, installation of monofilament dispensers or instructional signs and other projects that enhance and protect fisheries.  FFI partners with its councils and clubs on these grants and FFI members often do the “hands on” work needed to complete the projects. Recent grants awarded during the past months include:
  • Restoring a Tributary to the Manistee River in Michigan
  • Karnali River in Nepal
  • Aquila Mine on the Menominee River
  • Supported preservation of Turneffe Atoll

FFI Advocacy Through Conservation Actions

Grants are not the only way FFI is working to help.  We are also fighting for clean water, angler access and enhanced fisheries by taking positions on critical conservation issues.  Some recent actions include:

  • Boundary Waters
  • Preventing Asian Carp in the Great Lakes
  • Clean Water Rules
  • Bears Ears National Monument
  • Bristol Bay and Pebble Mine
Scott Hed, with Sportsmen Alliance for Alaska, reported that the long-running saga over the proposed Pebble Mine in southwest Alaska’s famed Bristol Bay region has taken some twists and turns in recent months. The project seemed on its last legs due to common-sense restrictions on disposal of mine waste that were proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2014. Well, it's not over yet!  We need to stay tuned and stay engaged. Click here to read the latest developments>>

Ways You Can Supports FFI Conservation Efforts

FFI is currently offering eyeglass lanyards for sale in the FFI store.  All proceeds from the sale of these lanyards go to support conservation efforts of FFI. The designer of these lanyards uses free-range deer and elk leathers from legally hunted game that are used for their meat. Each lanyard is corded by hand.  Each one is truly a work of art.  Click here to purchase>>

Certainly, direct donations to the Conservation program are always welcome and can be made online by clicking here.

Lake Erie Chapter of FFI Recognized

The Lake Erie Chapter of FFI was recognized recently by the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs for their efforts in the area of conservation.  Joan Rosner, club president, received top honors by receiving the Valerie E. Gonnello Sportswoman of the Year.  Cole Alexander, the youngest member of the club at 11, received the County Young Youth award.  And last but not least, Lake Erie Chapter won Club of the Year!  Congratulations to everyone!  You can read more in the Buffalo News.

It's important to recognize people for their efforts.  So, FFI gives its own awards and the deadline to nominate deserving people for those awards is fast approaching.  Please submit your nominations in by April 1. Click here for more information>>
