Great Lakes Council of Fly Fishers International Comments on March 8, 2018 EPA Letter on the Back Forty Mine Project.

The Great Lakes Council of Fly Fishers International has reviewed the March 8, 2018 letter from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency  to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality regarding the proposed Aquila Mine on the Menominee River.  That letter raises seven areas of concern regarding the project application and directs MDEQ to resolve those concerns within 90 days.  If not resolved in that time, MDEQ is directed to deny the permit for the mine.

Great Lakes Council President Dennis O’Brien and Conservation Chair Dave Peterson said, “The Great Lakes Council is pleased that the U.S Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the significant deficiencies in the Aquila proposal and the threat that this mine poses to the health of the Menominee River and its fishery.  The Council is pleased to have supported this effort with a grant to support the wetlands analysis that was submitted as part of the EPA’s review process”.
