Capt Jim  Barr

Capt Jim Barr Summary  Skinny Water Charters is based in Newport, RI, a beautiful seaside community surrounded by some of the worlds finest saltwater fishing grounds. Rhode Island and the surrounding waters of nearby Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts afford a truly world class fishery for the fly fishing enthusiast.

Fishing structures include offshore reefs accessed with fast sinking lines, shallow and protected salt ponds, vast estuaries, saltwater rivers, beaches, flats, boulder fields and near shore sand bars that are fished with floating and intermediate lines utilizing a wide variety of poppers, streamers and crustacean patterns.

Excellent top and shallow water Striper fishing begins in Little Narragansett Bay near Watch Hill in mid-April, with the larger fish arriving at the end of the month. Early May through mid-June Stripers are thick in the protected south shore salt ponds feeding on the Cinder Worm spawn. Narragansett Bay awakens in mid-May with top and shallow water opportunities for average to large Stripers and stays productive through June.

Warmer summer temperatures drive Stripers to deeper water but fishing remains great in cooler near shore reef structures, and during early morning and evening hours. Bluefish arrive by mid-July and provide abundant top water action through the late fall. Ocean Bonito, False Albacore and in some years School Bluefin Tuna show in the late summer and early fall and remain in our waters through late October when they school with Stripers and Blues and make their way to warmer southern waters.

In most years Rhode Island offers a full six months of great fly fishing opportunities. This is a fishery you must experience. If it’s a shallow water, low impact, gorgeous scenery, and cooperative fish experience you are seeking, allow Skinny Water Charters the opportunity to guide you.
