Fly Tying Group

The FFI Fly Tying Group will re-launch the Fly of the Month starting in the fall of 2025. We hope to have a wide variety of tiers and genres of fly patterns to help you with your fly tying. To achieve this variety, we will host a contest for the first 12 months of new Fly of the Month releases. We will select 12 presenters based on order of submission and suitability (variety, usability, etc) to be the first 12 Fly of the Month (FOM) presentations. We will track the traffic that each FOM receives for the first 30 days after release. The presenter with the highest traffic will be awarded a new vise (HMH TRV vise, retail value $596, https://tyingvise.com/product/hmh-trv-vise/).

If you’re interested in submitting a fly tying pattern and step by step tying directions, please send in your submission to fom.ftg@gmail.com. We will let you know if you are selected and when to expect to see your FOM presentation.

Presentation Guidelines:

We have made submitting a Fly of the Month article so much easier! You can now submit a completed Word Document or PDF if you prefer without having to worry about fitting it into a template. In addition, an accompanying video is no longer required, though if you would like to submit a link to one that is still fine. And if you would prefer to use a template, we can provide one. Here is what we need now:

1.         Fly Name, tier name, photographer name and fly creator (if known-optional).

2.         A link to a complimentary tying video – optional.

3.         A photo of the finished fly.

4.         Step by Step photos and tying descriptions for each section of the fly (see Submission Guidelines pdf for further details, link below).

5.         A short descriptive paragraph of less than 200 words about the fly. This can be historical information, how to fish it, its creation if it is original to you, or other relevant information.
