  Guide's Summary

I have been fly-fishing for twenty-one years, and guiding/ teaching professionally for eight. My entry into this wonderful sport was not so distinguished. My first experience with a fly rod occurred when I was seven. We were moving from the east coast to Washington State, and my family stopped by my grandfather’s place in Montana. I caught my first trout there, on a spinning rod, and I discovered fly-fishing. While putting away gear, I noticed a couple of beat-up Eagle Claw fly rods hanging on the wall. I asked my dad what they were, and he told me they were fly rods. He took one down, gave it to me, and I walked outside. I promptly hooked myself on my first casting attempt, and I was literally hooked for life! That brief, violent encounter began what has become an amazing, and life-altering experience. Growing up with a fly rod in my hands has made me who I am today, and ultimately led me to being a Certified Casting Instructor with the IFFF.

I did not have very many resources to help me on my initial journey when I was a kid. I am virtually self-taught, and I learned from failing-ALOT. I cannot complain, because that rocky start made me the fisherman, guide, and instructor I am today. I feel a need to make sure that anybody I guide or teach has a wonderful experience every time they go to the water. Some days are great because of the number of fish brought to hand, but more importantly, most days are great when you can comprehend what is going on, and can put a fly competently where you want it to go. The most important advice that I can give to any aspiring fly angler is to PRACTICE OFF OF THE RIVER.

A good day on the trout stream starts with good days on the practice pond. If you cannot cast a fly competently at the park, you should not be out on the river yet. This may seem odd, but in my experience, it has made a world of difference for my students, clients, and me.

The IFFF certification process has made me a better instructor, guide, and in some ways-a better caster. If you are ever in my neck of the woods, give me a jingle! I would love to show you some of my favorite water, and share with you my passion for this amazing sport.
