My adventure in fly fishing started in 1967 while attending Penn State in the heart of some of the best fly
fishing in the world. Over 45 years of fly fishing has taken me to many beautiful locations across the
country for a variety of fish such as trout, steelhead, salmon, walleye, small and largemouth bass,
musky, pike, pickerel, pan fish, and even a few saltwater species.
In 2003, I became an Certified Fly Casting Instructor, and in 2009 achieved certification as a Master.
I am also a registered PA Licensed Fishing Guide.
Since retiring from the National Forest, I have taught some aspect of fly fishing to 100’s of men and
women of all ages!! For five years I worked for LLBean as their principle instructor at the two-day
Introduction to Fly Fishing, Outdoor Discovery School in Front Royal, VA. For the last few years I have
operated “Gary Kell The Fly Fishing Coach and have prepared and taught dozens of fly fishing schools
and given many private lessons.
As a volunteer I am a active with both Trout Unlimited (TU) and Federation of Fly Fishers(FFF).
I have also spent many volunteer hours for Boy Scouts, Women in the Outdoors, casting and fishing
clubs, local schools and other organizations, teaching a variety of subjects from aquatic insects to the
double haul casting technique.
As a Master Certified Instructor, I am actively mentoring CI candidates, attending and teaching at
continuing education events, as well as organizing events for and testing candidates for certification.
I currently operate Gary Kell The Fly Fishing Coach, providing a variety of fly fishing instruction services.
