The Boreal Caddis

As far as I can tell, there is no universal fly pattern attributed to someone named the "Boreal Caddis". It is obviously an adaptation of the great Elk Hair Caddis using more synthetic materials. I tied this particular version on a cold fall night with the northern lights visible outside my window. This is not a unique design by any means. I wanted a simple to tie fly with sparkle and a low rider in the surface film. I consider it an attractor caddis that is very easy to follow.

MATERIALS

Hook: Ahrex 510 (14)

Thread: Semperfli Nano (Black)

Abdomen: Fulling Mill Flex-Floss (Light Olive)

Rib: Ultra Wire (Blue SM)

Wing: Hareline Sparkle Emerger Yarn (Amber), Krystal Flash (Gold)

Legs: Poly Yarn (White)

Thorax: Fulling Mill Tactical Peacock Dub

Step 1. Lay thread base part way down curve.

Step 2. Attach Flex-Floss and wire at bend.

Step 3. Wrap Flex-Floss then the wire rib (3/4 of hook).

Step 4. Lay out pieces of wing material (blend together).

Step 5. Attach on top of hook at end of abdomen.

Step 6. Attach piece of Poly yarn perpendicular to hook.

Step 7. Lightly dub a thorax over thread wraps.

Step 8. Fold back wing material over eye to back of hook (trim).

Step 9. Trim back the Poly yarn to form short out-rigger legs.

Step 10. Half-Hitch or Whip Finish at the eye.

Step 11. Add a drop of glue at thread wraps and perform final trimming.
