Beginner Fly Fishing Starter Kit
Recommendations
These are the items you truly need to get started.
🎣 1. Rod, Reel & Line Setup
These three pieces work together, so matching sizes is important.
Fly Rod
- 9' 5‑weight fly rod (the most versatile beginner size)
Versatile for trout, bass, and general freshwater fishing
Fly Reel
- 5‑weight fly reel (to match the rod) Weight‑forward floating fly line (WF5F)
Should match your rod weight
Doesn’t need to be expensive—just reliable with a smooth drag
Fly Line
Weight‑forward floating fly line (WF5F) is the standard
Make sure the line weight matches your rod and reel
Backing
20–30 lb backing (fills the reel and adds extra line for long runs)
Thin line that fills the reel under your fly line
Gives you extra length if a fish runs
🧵 2. Leaders & Tippet
- Leader: tapered line that connects fly line to fly
- Tippet: thin line added to the end of the leader for stealth and longevity
- 9 ft tapered leaders (4X or 5X are good all‑around choices)
- Tippet spools (4X, 5X)
