Continuing Education - The Five Essentials - Revisited with Bruce Richards

Bill and Jay Gammel’s Five Essentials have been foundational for those wanting to cast and instruct well since 1990. Knowing these essentials and how they affect every cast is necessary for casters who want to truly understand fly casting. In this presentation, I’d like to add some detail to each of the essentials and modernize them a bit to include the official FFI fly casting definitions which were adopted in 2015.  I'll also discuss how to apply the Five Essentials when teaching fly casting.

Bruce worked for Scientific Anglers for 34 years, designing and making fly lines along with numerous other jobs. He is a charter member of the CICP and was chairman of the board for 4 years.  Studying fly casting, teaching and writing about it has been a passion for many decades.  Bruce and his colleague Prof. Noel Perkins developed the electronic Casting Analyzer and continue to study fly casting.  Bruce is also a recipient of the FFI Lifetime Achievement in Fly Casting Instruction award and the FFI Award of Distinction for Leadership and Service. An avid angler Bruce has fished around the world.
